We just crossed an amazing milestone that we wanted to celebrate with all of you. Rec Room now has over 10 million members. If Rec Room were a country, it would now be larger than Sweden🇸🇪 , Portugal 🇵🇹 and Greece 🇬🇷
It wasn’t that long ago, I was so excited after 100 people showed up for a beta test of dodgeball to “pressure test” our servers. We’ve come a long way since then, and it’s not just the player base that’s grown, it’s the creator community as well. Over 1M people have created rooms in Rec Room. Our little metaverse is growing up, and it now has more than 4M unique rooms to check out. If you wanted to spend just a minute exploring each, it would take the better part of a decade. We’re seeing our daily active users are now averaging 2.4 hours/day in Rec Room, so apparently a few of you are attempting this virtual world tour 🌎 Just remember, with nearly 20k new rooms being added every day, it’ll be tough to see it all.
2020 hasn’t been the easiest of years, but the positivity and creativity of the Rec Room community has been a real bright spot. It’s been so wonderful waking up each morning to check rec.net and see a collection of new rooms, creations and events to explore. The endless number of friendly people to meet and creative places to visit made quarantine a bit more bearable and we have all of you to thank for building a wonderful community.
We’re anxiously looking forward to 2021 and we have so many amazing things planned for Rec Room in the new year. New social features, new platforms, better creator tools, new games, bigger events… and maybe even a few bugs, but that would be really unlike us 😬… I don’t want to share everything we’re working on, but there is one really important development I want to call out. Next year, we’re going to get creators paid 💰
We couldn’t have built Rec Room without all of you, and we’re excited to announce that we’ll be paying out over $1M to creators in 2021 as part of our Creator Compensation Program which is slated to launch in the first quarter of the new year. We love all the work you’ve done to make Rec Room a fun and welcoming place, and we can’t wait to get you rewarded for all your creativity.
To help us scale up our team so we can make this happen, we’re excited to announce that we’ve raised a $20M Series C led by Madrona Venture Group, a firm based in our own hometown of Seattle 🌧 A big thanks to Madrona and our existing investors who also participated in the round - DAG, First Round, Index and Sequoia.
So to all of you, I raise a bottle of root beer and a piece of pizza 🍕 Thanks for helping us build Rec Room into what it is today. I can’t wait to see what you build next year. See you in the metaverse 🤩
